Dead Ringers

Image
The new Prime Video version of “Dead Ringers” works better once you divorce yourself from your memories of the excellent 1988 original. Sure, it’s still the story of gynecologist twin doctors and it maintains a healthy degree of the icy menace from the original, but it carves out a unique, confident identity of its own that more than justifies its existence. The 2023 "Dead Ringers" is far more than a mere replication of the source, taking inspiration from the book Twins by Bari Wood and Jack Geasland to do what is very much its own thing. With three episodes directed or co-directed by the great Sean Durkin (“ Martha Marcy May Marlene ,” “ The Nest ”) and a stunner by the great Karyn Kusama (“The Invitation”), this is an accomplished piece of art. The sense in the first half of the season that it might not justify being a 6-hour series instead of a 2-hour film disappears by the stunning final chapter, a vicious piece of work that will stand with the best episodes of TV th...

Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni & Tupac Shakur

Image
Allen Hughes ’ docuseries “Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni and Tupac Shakur ” strives for nothing less than to be a complete account of rapper Tupac Shakur. But to do that, Hughes reckons, one must understand the story of his Black Panther revolutionary mother, Afeni. She was an outspoken leader, media mythmaker, a person dedicated to the betterment of her community; she was known for acts of empathy, hurt, anger, intelligence, and fearlessness. So was her son, who was fired up to spread the same message to an even wider audience. Hughes wants to tell both life stories in the same five-hour series, and that goal becomes more important than whether things flow gracefully. Ambition can be a messy act of passion, and throughout an eye-opening and sometimes disorienting five hours, we come to share Hughes’ intricate admiration for the Shakurs and their impact across movements and generations.   The sensitive project features an incredible roster of people who sit with Hughes and crew to...

Evil Dead Rise

Image
In terms of horror franchises, “ Evil Dead ” has accomplished something miraculous: There has yet to be a bad movie bearing its name. Much of this comes down to series creator Sam Raimi , who’s picky enough about who he lets play with his groovy blood-soaked baby that there have only been five “Evil Dead” movies over the course of forty-plus years. But there’s also something about the elemental simplicity of its premise—the totally loony “Army of Darkness” excepted, of course—that makes “Evil Dead” just work. The latest in the series, “ Evil Dead Rise,” comes from Irish writer/director Lee Cronin , whose 2019 feature debut “ The Hole in the Ground ” also revolves around sinkholes and mommy issues. Cronin’s grimy sensibility is much closer to that of remake director Fede Alvarez than Raimi’s live-action cartoons. But he does share one key thing with Raimi, and that’s a diabolical imagination.  Marketing for the film revolves around a key scene with a cheese grater, but “Evil Dea...

River

Image
In a mild coincidence, a little before I watched this impressionistic documentary directed by Jennifer Peedom and Joseph Nizeti , I also screened David Cronenberg ’s 1991 " Naked Lunch ," which features Willem Dafoe doing voice work as both a talking typewriter and a Mugwump ( look it up , it’s worth it). And I thought, “Gee willikers, isn’t Dafoe a great voice actor as well as a great physical actor,” because the two aren’t mutually exclusive, after all. While his register isn’t quite baritone, it has a character-filled warmth that carries notes of both profundity and playful wit with every utterance. And as it happens, “River,” a brief and often visually staggering film, is narrated by Dafoe, who is seen briefly in black-and-white, negotiating a recording booth while the Australia Chamber Orchestra tunes up nearby. After everybody’s ready, the real flow begins. A series of stunning shots of water in various permutations. A kayaker going down rapids. Torrents descending ...

Quasi

Image
There was a time when it felt like Broken Lizard might be the next Monty Python or National Lampoon. “ Super Troopers ” still has a devoted audience that quotes it between bong hits. “Club Dread” is their most underrated and maybe funniest movie. “Beerfest”? Pretty solid comedy. And then everything kind of ground to a halt. Jay Chandrasekhar went on to direct some truly excellent comedy television, including some of the funniest episodes of “Arrested Development,” and I always wondered if that career move led to the relative dissolution of BL. Sure, they made a few more forgettable movies and a well-received TV show called “Tacoma FD,” but I truly hoped that the new “Quasi,” now on Hulu, would be a return to form. It’s not. There are some laughs here and there, but they’re mainly in the first 15-20 minutes before the gang runs out of jokes and starts repeating the same ones. Honestly, the only real joy to be found in “Quasi” is the kind that comes from seeing a group of old friends...

Highlights of the 2023 TCM Film Festival

Image
“You ain’t seen nothing yet,” proclaimed Al Jolson in “ The Jazz Singer ” (1927), and for the 14th annual edition of the TCM Classic Film Festival, organizers borrowed the same tagline for their showcase of movies the way they were meant to be experienced: On the big screen. With more than 100 screenings and events, including celebrity appearances, panel discussions, book signings, midnight movies and special presentations, the festival unspooled April 13-16 at the historic TCL Chinese Theatre complex, the recently restored Hollywood Legion Theater and the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Along with screenings devoted to the usual categories of “Essentials,” “Discoveries” and special themes, several world-premiere restorations took pride of place, including the opening-night movie “ Rio Bravo ” (1959), “Penny Serenade” (1941) and “Man’s Castle” (1933). This year’s festival honorees were historian Donald Bogle, recipient of the annual Robert Osborne Award, and Oscar-winning production d...
